Leoni celebrated its 20th anniversary at Cuauhtémoc in Chihuahua, Mexico

Location has grown strongly and is very much going for electromobility with plant expansion

Cuauhtémoc – Leoni, a global solution provider for energy and data management in the automotive sector and other industries, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Wire & Cable Solutions Division (WCS) location in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico. The anniversary celebration on 26 February was attended by a large number of guests, including the Governor of Chihuahua, Javier Corral Jurado, the Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, Alejandra De la Vega, the Federal Deputy, Patricia Terrazas and the Deputy Mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Romeo Morales.

Leoni Cable in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico, has expanded rapidly over the past decade. Millions of dollars have been invested in buildings and machinery to expand the portfolio of wire and vehicle cable products.

Growth of product diversity, capacity and jobs

Capacity for coaxial and battery wires, oil and gas industry cables, high-temperature and high-voltage cables, and models for charging systems for electric and hybrid vehicles also grew over this period. Investment in personnel, equipment and buildings is making it possible to create even more medium-level jobs, as well as technical, administrative and management positions, in addition to the 790 jobs that have been created to date. The number of employees has more than tripled since 2009.

Clear focus on electromobility

With a new extension for electromobility, Leoni is currently increasing its production area of 33,000 m2 by approx. 7,000 m2. The total area will thus grow by about 29,000 m2 from previously 76,000 m2.

With this project, called EMOMEX (E-Mobility Mexico), Leoni is matching the mega-trend of vehicle electrification, especially in the form designing, developing and producing high-voltage cables and cables for charging systems. An investment of USD 27 million in equipment and machinery will further increase capacity for this and recruit 123 new, highly qualified staff in the region for the project.

A production facility and a warehouse of the highest quality were built using innovative construction techniques in cooperation with American Industries. The building is equipped with, among other things, a high-quality air conditioning and heating system, a modern fire alarm system, LED lighting and photovoltaic panels for outdoor illumination. The total area of the new building is 7,500 square meters including offices and outdoor spaces with the option of a future additional extension of 3,200 square meters.

In the run-up to the anniversary celebration, Bill Livengood, President of Leoni WCS North America, once again praised the good cooperation with the state of Chihuahua and the city of Cuauhtémoc.
